例 えば経営統合を決めた新日本製鉄と住友金属工業は合計で795万キロワットの発電能力を持っている。これがどのくらいの数字かというと、事故の起こった福 島第１原発の470万キロワットよりはるかに大きく、四国電力の総発電能力666万キロワットさえ上回る。「うちはちょっとした電力会社でもある」という 新日鉄首脳の言葉は大げさではない。

　製鉄の過程で、高炉やコークス炉で発生する高温の水素ガスやメタンを回収し、それを燃やして電力をつくる。自社で使い切れない分は東京電力 など地元の電力会社に卸売りし、地域全体の発電体制の一翼も担ってきた。深刻な電力不足が予測される今年の夏は、能力目いっぱい発電することで、自社の操 業をまかなうだけでなく、社会全体に還元したい考えだ。
